150 Years Of Sweet Perfection On Bond Street

Charbonnel et Walker Luxury History

Nestled in the heart of Mayfair, amidst the legacy of couture, craftsmanship, and culture, Charbonnel et Walker celebrates a momentous milestone - 150 years of fine chocolate artistry.

A Parisian beginning, a London legacy

The story begins in 1875, when Madame Charbonnel, a distinguished chocolatier from Paris, joined forces with Mrs. Walker, a British artisan known for crafting ornate hat and jewellery boxes. Drawn together by their shared love of refinement, they crossed the Channel to bring the magic of Parisian chocolate houses to London. Their first boutique opened at 173 New Bond Street, an address that quickly became synonymous with indulgence.

Their creations, delicate fondant creams, whisky-laced pralines, and rose and violet-scented delights, were presented in satin-lined boxes and crystal vases. Not just confections, but treasures. So much so, that the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, became an early and enthusiastic patron.

A heritage of innovation

Charbonnel et Walker’s history is peppered with charming innovation. In the 1920s, they introduced Numbered Chocolates, allowing customers to order their favourites by catalogue. Then came The Chocolate Register, a whimsical idea encouraging gentlemen to record the chocolate preferences of their loved ones. In a time of handwritten notes and silver spoons, it was a delightfully personal touch.

And who could forget the Boîtes Blanches? These elegant white boxes with flowing satin ribbons became the must-have gift of the Edwardian era, so iconic, they remain in production today.

The taste of today

While the traditions remain, Charbonnel et Walker continues to evolve. The beloved Milk and Pink Marc de Champagne Truffles, introduced in the 1990s, brought a new generation of chocolate lovers. Today, customers can choose from a kaleidoscope of flavours from Sea Salt Caramel to Dark Chocolate with edible gold leaf, all still crafted with the same care and dedication.

A celebration of craft

As they mark 150 years of sweet success, Charbonnel et Walker invite you to take a trip down memory lane. Every month until Christmas step in store and discover the 'Chocolate of the Month' straight from the archive recipe book. For August, indulge in a zesty, soft-centred Orange Cream and if you're one of the first 150 to visit the store at 28 Old Bond Street to sample it, you will receive one a Duo Ballotin gift with any purchase.

Here’s to the next 150 years - just as rich, refined, and irresistibly sweet.
