What's On: Bob Dylan at Halcyon

Halcyon Gallery Art Art Galleries Culture

Discover a new solo show from visionary artist, Bob Dylan at Halcyon gallery this summer. Point Blank features 97 original paintings on paper, all of which demonstrate Dylan's sensibility for storytelling. Finding poetic resonance in the details, his artworks - like his music - concern the characters, objects and world views that inspire him. The new paintings read like a glimpse into his journal; brimming with joy, they masterfully capture unique snapshots of the artist's everyday.

Sketched out originally with graphite whilst touring between 2021 and 2022, Dylan intuitively painted over enlarged reproductions with cheerful colours and expressive brushwork to create this latest ensemble of paintings. The manner of his subjects assists in the series' playful nature, from flowerpots to vanity mirrors, saxophonists and cowboys. Halcyon is delighted to exhibit the artist's sketchbook containing the original drawings alongside the paintings that inspire it, to supplement the exhibition.

The painterliness of the new series is infused with a spontaneity indicative of capturing fleeting moments or memories. Rough painted edges emphasise this narrative, as the works seem to convey Dylan’s eagerness to remember every detail.

Dylan has said previously that drawing provides moments where he can ‘relax and refocus a restless mind’ amidst busy schedules. Point Blank has that same familiar energy: providing an insight into the artist’s imagination and immediate surroundings.

In addition to the 97 artworks on display, Dylan has reworked a limited selection of the drawings as blue, red and neutral monochromatic studies. These additional works emphasise Dylan’s mastery with tonality and emphasise the emotional weight of his narratives.

Visit the exhibition at Halcyon Gallery, 148 New Bond Street until 6th July.
