The Transitional Edit: Pieces To Segue Into The New Season In Style

It's that time of the year when summer temperatures can strike at any time, throwing even the most sartorially prepared off-track. Stepping from one season into another calls for easy-to-throw-on pieces – a sharp denim jacket, a great pair of trousers and a cosy knit.

Luckily, the arrival of autumn/winter 2025 collections makes this transitional season a little easier to navigate. Whether it's a beautiful pair of streamlined boots from Chloé or fine-spun knits at Zegna, you don't have to look far for inspiration on Bond Street. Better still, we've done all the hard work for you with our essential between-season roundup below.

Autumn-ready accessories

Whether cutting a dash at London fashion week, 18-22 September, or meeting friends for coffee at Ralph's, you'll need the perfect boot to step out in. Alexander McQueen's new T-Bar ankle boots, £990, are cut from black suede and topped with a gold metal T-bar detail engraved with the house logo. Other features include a gold zip, block heel and soft, pointed toe.

When it comes to fashion's accessory du jour, Gucci's Softbit maxi leather top handle bag, £2,560, comes with an internal detachable zipped pouch and magnetic fastening. Elsewhere, Hermès' new Libris stole, £980, in a punchy shade of tangerine, blends cashmere and silk to create a subtle jacquard weave design – so soft you won't want to take it off.

Cropped jacket or classic knit?

Either will do nicely when the weather turns, and late September days start to require an additional layer. Max Mara's wool and cashmere cropped jacket, £1,410, with its wide kimono sleeves and slanted side pockets, is perfect for wearing over a long-sleeved jersey top or fine-spun cashmere jumper.

Staying with sumptuous knits, sometimes you just want to wrap up with an oversized cardigan. If this is the case, this piece from the new autumn/winter 2025 Valentino collection is just the ticket.

Prada's Old Gabardine blouson jacket, £1,660, has a decidedly retro feel. A minimalist silhouette gives this particular style a distinctive edge. Other features include a shirt-style collar, elasticised cuffs and a powder pink hue – enough to keep the summer vibes going just that little bit longer.

The ultimate transitional trouser shape

Several trouser styles will work just as well during late summer days as they will during autumn's cooler evenings. When it comes to superior comfort, Loro Piana's Plane Tree trousers, £2,245, are spun from rare baby cashmere. The cable pattern is designed to run down the leg, while ribbed ankle cuffs ensure a more structured element to this slouchy jogger style.

Trust Stella McCartney to come up with perfectly cut jeans and denim jackets. Her brown wash denim jeans, £750, are the result of luxuriously weighted organic cotton and distressed details. Cut to a mid-rise, straight-leg silhouette, they look polished when paired with a slinky top and kitten heels. Who said summer-to-autumn dressing was hard?
