What’s on: Ralph & Russo Haute Couture Auction at Bonhams

Bonhams Exhibition

The summer edition of Ralph & Russo’s haute couture archive – on auction at Bond Street’s Bonhams until 24 July – is the second opportunity for collectors to get their hands on rare runway designs. Earlier this year, dresses worn by the likes of Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway and Kylie Jenner were held in an online auction. The spotlight item, a chiffon and tulle gown (worn by Angelina Jolie to the UK premier of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), was expected to go under the hammer for £6,000 and sold for a staggering £43,520.

The new edition of atelier dresses includes an amethyst and silver zibeline gown with silk organza bell sleeves from the fashion house’s autumn/winter 2017 collection (expected to sell for between £4,000 and £6,000) and an on-trend butter-yellow silk chiffon gown with hand-pleated godets, which could fetch upwards of £5,000.

Founded in 2010 by Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, Ralph & Russo gained a reputation for its opulent red-carpet gowns. The only British label to be invited by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture to show its first runway collection, the brand went into administration following the pandemic before being acquired by Retail Commerce Ventures LLC.

Meg Randell, UK and Europe head of designer handbags and fashion at Bonhams, said: ‘Curating the first Ralph & Russo archive auction in January was an extraordinary experience – from exploring the atelier’s archive to seeing global bidders respond with such enthusiasm. The remarkable result for the gown worn by Angelina Jolie to the premier of Maleficent is a true testament to the brand’s enduring allure.

‘We’re honoured to be partnering with Ralph & Russo once again for our summer edition, offering 50 more exceptional pieces that celebrate the artistry of the house. Presented as part of our Summer Salon, the collection will sit alongside a handpicked selection of luxury handbags, fine jewellery and watches – a true celebration of style and elegance.’
